We The People

Students from the Folsom School, Alburg and Isle La Motte traveled to the Flynn Center to see the performance, “We the people” by Theater Works on Tuesday, November 30th. The production showcased the American system of government and highlighted the checks and balances between the three branches while illustrating their relationships to the constitution. The first amendment took an especially important role because the freedoms of speech, assembly, religion, petition and press were integral to the performance by a rock band of founding fathers. The performance featured music and dance from rock, rap and hip-hop that was geared to inspire a 14 year-old-student to run for student council president for the right reasons and not just for her college application.
This trip and performance, along all of our Flynn activities, was supported by generous grants from the Vermont Council of the Arts, which has supported district wide Words Come Alive! support for the past four years. The Words Come Alive program revolutionized instruction at the Folsom School, where differentiation and respect for different learning styles empowers students to learn and demonstrate their learning through dance, drama and story telling. This show perfectly modeled the use of performance art that entertained and demonstrated an understanding of government. According to authors like Daniel Pink, it is exactly this type of experience that students need to be successful in the 21st century work place.
