MLK Celebration

Student volunteers from the World of Difference program presented five high quality activities for students in Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. this past Friday. Austin Lumiere got involved in a world of difference to make a change in the school and possible the community. He felt hat we needed to stop bullying and help kids who are getting picked on because it is hurting kids.

Sean Kerr and Caleb Schirmer led a book discussion about Ruby Bridges, who modeled tolerance by praying for the people who discriminated against her. They asked questions such as,"how have things changed between then and now". According to Sean, he noticed that students have said that there is less segregation and people are more kind to one another. Izzy Fearn wanted to set up projects to help the whole school work together. Mrs. Buerman and Mrs. Decatur, Mrs. Fisher.

Haeli Warren and Sydney Sanderson led a "Dream Catcher" activity where students complimented one another while passing string around the dream catcher. Students shared their admiration for one another as readers, athletes and friends. This same station allowed for students to write down their dreams, such as "world peace" and fears like, "death".

Paul Federico ran acitvities in the gym with a bridge activity where you run when you agree with a statment, such as,"do you like green?" or "would you like world peace?" Ian Sasso Spaulding loved this activity because he got to run and think at the same time.

Silva Warren ran the human domino activity that highlighted the similarities we are share but that may go unnoticed. Silva said that she liked the activity because it ended with everyone connected in a circle. In the charades activity, students acted out words like tolerance, bullying and peace using confidence and skills they have gained from the

Izzy Fearn and Austin Lumiere organized a five stage cookie assembly, from dough to frosting with every student from Folsom participating in the process. This activity not only captivated students with delicious cookies but modeling a collaborative work flow that enabled the students to accomplish something they could not achieved otherwise. Every student at Folsom ended the day with a cookie and a deeper sense of connection to one another.
